Earlier this year I was lucky enough to have Michael sweep me away on a surprise trip to Prague. After dealing with the whole issue of having an out of date passport and barely any time to renew it (there were tears) (would recommend checking you have a valid passport well in advance of travel…), my only concern was appreciating this beautiful city and finding food to eat! Luckily, neither of those things were too hard a task…
If Prague is not somewhere you’ve considered travelling before, I would definitely encourage it. Visit the clock tower and the museums in the city centre before heading over the stunning Charles Bridge which takes you towards the castle and the John Lennon Wall.
On to the ever important subject of what to eat! I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of vegan options available in Prague, the only reason we struggled for food on our visit was when we were too lost to locate a restaurant (take a map out with you!).
Being slightly too early to check into our hotel, once we’d arrived we dropped off our bags and headed straight out to explore. Hungry from the travelling, we wandered around the city in search of food. Having no idea where to locate any vegan food, no internet on our phones and no ability to speak Czech, we struggled.
The market stalls we passed were all piled high with fruit and veg, but keen for a hot meal to fill us up, we ventured on. Finally, having gained a shiny new set of blisters on my feet, we stumbled, by chance, upon a thai restaurant. After a quick glance at the menu in the window, we realised it had clearly marked vegan options! Whilst I would always prefer to try local cuisine, quite frankly anything void of animal products would have done at this point.
We enjoyed a little feast of fresh summer rolls with hoisin dipping sauce, followed by pad-thai (minus the egg) for Michael, and tofu fried rice for myself.
Our best find on the trip was a cafe called Country Life, right in the heart of the Old Town. This is such a perfect lunch stop; it’s a buffet/canteen style cafe where you help yourself from a range of salads, dips, cold dishes & hot dishes and then pay based on the weight of your plate. This is a completely vegetarian and dairy free cafe – some items do contain egg but they are clearly marked.
We went a couple of times because we found it such a great place to eat. Piling my plate high, full of pasta, salad and nutritional yeast, it was the ideal fuel stop to give us the energy to keep exploring.
We weren’t short of snacks when we were out and about either, with the easter markets catering to us plant eaters with candied nuts and deep fried potato twists. We also nabbed some treats in the form of dark chocolate crispy cakes from the chocolatiers in the Old Town.
On our final night, I discovered a restaurant on Happy Cow that was literally 2 minutes from our hotel and completely vegan! It was a little place called Plevel, tucked away inside an indoor shopping area. We had a lovely 3 course meal, which included a tomato and garlic dip, burger & celeriac chips, smoked tofu with carrot puree & bananas (a random, but delicious combination), with a slice of cake for dessert.
It was a such a nice meal to end our trip on, relaxed and happy with how stress-free it had been to find such good quality food on our little adventure. Our only disappointment came when we went in search of a restaurant called LoVeg, which serves vegan versions of traditional Czech food and has excellent reviews – but it was closed when we were there! One to add to the list if you happen to be visiting and you can let me know what it’s like!
